STORE OF BRIGG MEMORIES

Many of us were sad to see Poundstretcher close its Brigg town shop in Wrawby Street. We took this picture the other day to the rear of the premises, close to Old Courts Road.
The shop - seen below shortly before closure - has now been cleared and put on the market.

I can't just be sure of the starting date, but I think this was the first supermarket-style shop in Brigg, maybe the late sixties. The long, narrow, layout lasted, but it changed hands several times before the long run as Poundstretcher.

Back then, it was new and unusual. Now, most small shops echo the pattern. When Poundstretcher closed it was the end of an era.

It was around the same time that frozen food retail started. I recall a company called "Compass House" in Grimsby that was just north of Cleethorpes Road, close to the Freeman Street junction. Streetview shows the building on Orwell Street with the remnants of the sign visible. The retail operation was on Cromwell Road for a while, Lynton Parade fits my memory.

Nothing to do with Brigg, but a lot was changing at that time.
