am also interested in the social lives of my ancestors.
"I know I do not live in the area but just out of interest I thought I would
let you know my 4x great grand uncle John Quipp (born 1775) lived on Quipps Lane,
Brigg, re. the 1841 census.
"According to the council minutes 1869, showing street renaming in Brigg,
Quipps Lane became Market Lane.
"From what I have been able to find so far, it would appear this area has
been completely redeveloped so I have no idea what it looked like in days gone
by."
Maybe someone who follows Brigg Blog will have pictures that many help Andrea by showing this part of town during the second half of the 19th century.

From the top of my head - Quipps Lane was named after a family of bakers which lived just down the lane from the Market Place.
It was re-named when the Brigg Board (or similar name) adopted the road circa 1880ish.
At that time the lane led to allotments bordering which is now Barnard Ave (at the time an open drain).
It also led to Brigg Gas Works by following Quipps Lane and then turning left where the allotments started.
Behind the Hope Inn (now the empty shop to the left of Market Lane) was the cobbled cattle market...and access was also gained via Quipps/Market Lane.
Just after Quipps bakery to the right and a short distance down the lane where 3 rows (in the shape of 3 sides of a square) of traditional Brigg cottages (low cottages with dormers above) - basically on the site which is now the car park area of Grimley Smith (previously the site of Smith Parkinsons garage.
Further along the lane was a farm house just to the right of the lane - name forgotten.
Circa late '50's, the area was cleared as part of a slum clearance programme and wasn't thereafter developed - apart from Tesco and its car park being constructed over the foot-print of the norther section of Market Lane. Although a taxi firm operated from some premises down Market Lane for some time thereafter....and a new cattle market arena (roughly where Tesco petrol is now) was built.
Mr Lyons (remind me of his first name, Nige) book 'Lanes and Passageways of Brigg' - copy available in the library (reference section) shows the plan of Quipps Lane circa 1880's.
John Holland and his wife are local photographic historians of Brigg....and it just happens that Mrs Holland once lived in the farm house down Market Lane - so the Hollands may prove an invaluable photographic resource to pursue.
Over recent years Market Lane has been the hub of some controversy - viz-a-viz whether it is a public highway, a footpath, or private land following the incident of Grimley Smith gating its entrance from the Market Place - this legal wrangle has not yet been resolved........
