TWINKLING LIGHTS WOULD MAKE CHRISTMAS IN BRIGG EVEN BRIGHTER

Twinkling Christmas lights may be added to Brigg town centre illuminations for the 2014 festive season.
Brigg Town Council, which provides the lights, is thinking about replacing traditional bulbs with modern LED varieties. And they offer the ability for different coloured lights to run in sequence, giving a twinkling effect.
Anchor points to those buildings carrying the illuminations are also in need of investment, prior to the annual stress test which must be undertaken to comply with health and safety regulations.
The cost of refurbishment has yet to be established and approved but the Town Council does not want to wait too long before resolving the matter.
It is hoped to recoup the expenditure in equipment over several years by massive savings in the Christmas period electricity bill, as LED lights use considerably less "juice" and are also  longer lasting.
Members of the Brigg Town Council Property and Services Committee, meeting on Wednesday night in the Angel Suite Lounge, held what Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard described as "a broad discussion." She will now come back to councillors with costings.
Mrs Woollard said the update would offer an opportunity to put more lights up in the town centre, particularly in the Market Place.
One option might be to "garland" the balcony on the front of the Angel building.
Coun Ann Eardley hoped LED lighting would enable better illuminations on the town centre Christmas tree "which didn't look very effective this year."

I've never really been totally sold on Brigg's Crimbo lights.
I think I read somewhere that they cost Brigg TC £20k per festive season.
My comments my annoy some folks, but the zig-zag lines of coloured light-bulbs gives the impression that the town has obtained some cheap and dated decorations from Blackpool.
The whole scheme of things is not helped by the unfortunately sited Crimbo tree thinly festooned by a inadequate string of bulbs.
The only time the festive decorations demonstrate any effort to be attractive is at night - in the day-time, plastic candles, Daddy Christmas and the odd angel look aged and tatty.
The deco's are not particularly sophisticated and perhaps Brigg needs to re-think its festive alternatives.
I, owing to the cost, accept that not everything can be changed at once. but perhaps some thought could be given to:
1. Rather than a zig-zag string of hanging Crimbo bulbs - perhaps there should be planned cluster of illuminated festive decorations at specified locations.
2. Replace the coloured bulbs for clear bulbs - this will avoid the present cheap fairground look and make the town slightly more maturely sophisticated.
3. If we are going have a Crimbo tree - let's erect it in a decent place and decorate it attractively to give it justice.
4. The shops' overhung Christmas trees have now had their day. Instead of offering shop keepers the opportunity to purchase such a tree and have it decorated at a cost, examine alternatives - one could even devise illuminated, Christmas mobiles - get kids, schools and groups involved in their design and manufacture - mush more interesting and inventive than rows of boring crimbo trees....
So there, I've said....and to be honest, it needed to voiced.....
