MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
After their first home win of the season in the league against Romulus FC on Saturday, Brigg faced a stiff task when facing Sheffield FC away on Tuesday evening but the team played well enough to deserve at least the point they achieved from the game, keeping them in touch with a handful of other teams currently above them in the table. William Peers was not available but George Zuerner made his debut in mid- field and both Paul Ashton and Paul Grimes returned on the substitutes' bench after missing the last couple of games.
The home side mounted the first attack but Ollie Fisher headed well clear from a left wing corner kick. Brigg immediately responded with the ball switched from the right wing across the pitch to Danny Buttle on the left and his deep cross into the goal area was headed wide by Jordan Thewliss. Ryan Paczkowski conceded a foul outside the penalty area but Rob Zand saved the free kick comfortably. Brigg went ahead after twelve minutes of play when JORDAN THEWLISS won the ball close to the right wing corner flag and struck a weak shot towards goal, which home 'keeper Rob Pouter mis- judged and the ball trickled into the back of the net off the upright post. Brigg looked comfortable with the lead and the home team struggled to mount any kind of threat . Michael Jacklin got forward to head another cross from Danny Buttle over the bar. Unfortunately, the home team levelled the score after thirty- two minutes of play when STUART LUDLAM switched the ball from the right to Ben Algar advancing into space on the left and the latter delivered a sweet cross into the penalty area for the former to head the ball into the near side of the net . Just before half time, Ryan Paczkowski worked his way into a dangerous position in the penalty area but was blocked by a firm tackle from Jamie Hadfield.
At the start of the second half, Ollie Fisher got well forward from his right full back position to send a fierce shot narrowly past the upright of Rob Poulter's goal from twenty-five yards out. Rob Poulter was forced to save from Jamie Hadfield' deflected header on the hour mark and a right wing cross went along the face of the goal without any available finishing touch. Brigg continued to enjoy most of the second half possession and Rob Zand didn't have a shot to save but a free kick from Warren Burrell grazed the cross bar ten minutes from the end of the game after he was allowed a free shot at goal with no defensive wall in position.
Brigg now face Bamber Bridge at home tomorrow (Saturday Oct 5) in the Preliminary Round of this year's FA Trophy competition.
