HAWTHORNS PITCH IS CREDIT TO BRIGG TOWN FC

Brigg Town Football Club have not had a very successful season, but the Hawthorns playing area has been kept to a very high standard. It is a real credit to the historic club, which has been flying the flag for Brigg in the sporting world since mid-Victorian times.
The other day I read a paragraph somewhere suggesting that no men's midweek football matches will be necessary this month in the Scunthorpe area.
In the days of Brigg Amateurs FC, and others, it always seemed necessary to fit in so-called night games to catch up on ones cancelled due to bad weather during January and February. These midweek encounters often proved high-scoring.
Had we been writing this posting for Brigg Blog 25 years ago, thoughts would have been turning to the winding down of winter sports and the arrival of cricket.
Brigg Men's Hockey Club used to bring down the curtain on the season with a couple of enjoyable Friday night inter-club friendlies on grass pitches at Brigg Recreation Ground, following which we would get showered, don our best jackets with club ties and head off down to the Angel Hotel for the annual dinner - and a few beers!
Brigg Town Cricket Club would then start its season the next day.
Before the advent of league hockey, Brigg men often had "block fixtures" in which our four sides would play their opposite numbers from another club (two games at Brigg, two away).
These were generally on the same Saturday each year. Nottingham clubs West Bridgford and Notts Gregory were regular opponents at the beginning and the end of a campaign, while Grantham (Belvoir Castle) were other April opponents.
Some clubs also held rallies (tournaments) towards the end of the season in which Brigg would compete.
