Brigg Kumon Instructor Craig Cook was selected to give away copies of a popular book to local families, as part of World Book Night 2012.
The annual event was on Monday 23 April and Craig distributed the free books from his study centre in Brigg, located at St. Marys Catholic Church Hall on Barnard Avenue.
The title given away was called ‘Notes from a Small Island’ by Bill Bryson, described as, ‘A eulogy to Bryson’s beloved Britain which captures the very essence of the original green and pleasant land’.
Craig Cook explains: “At Kumon our aim is to inspire children with a lifelong love of reading. Children learn by example so if parents and other family members read and talk about books, children will want to do the same. I am delighted to have been chosen as one of the 20,000 volunteers to give away one of the World Book Night titles as part of our mission to get the country reading.”
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, 20,000 book lovers across the UK and Ireland gave away a further 1,000,000 books aimed at adult and teenage readers for this year’s World Book Night.
World Book Night followed World Book Day, the established children’s nationwide reading campaign.
On Tuesday 24 April, children at the Brigg Kumon Study Centre joined in the national literacy celebrations by bringing their favourite adventure books to class. As well as having fun reading and sharing exciting stories, there was the opportunity for students to win a mystery prize.
The aim of the Kumon English programme is to develop a habit of reading for both education and enjoyment. Students at the Brigg Kumon Centre are encouraged to read a wide variety of titles from the Kumon Recommended Reading List to help them find books they enjoy reading and that advance their reading skills.
Anyone interested in finding out more about Kumon’s maths and English programmes can call in to the Brigg Kumon Centre at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Brigg on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
