LET'S ENSURE BRIGG 'BOOKS' THE TREND

Brigg Blog wants to flag up a worthy initiative aimed at getting more people to read books.
In the age of the Kindle, online news and features, social networking and multi-purpose mobile phones, many of us still like to read books.
But there's a danger that today's youngsters may miss out on the joy of books.
We need to ensure that they turn over a new leaf and don't just read on the screen.
So the Bookstart reading programme is inviting people to get involved in its 20th anniversary celebrations by making a simple pledge: to share 20 books in 2012.
Bookstart provides free books to babies, toddlers and three-year-olds, and has given out more than 30 million books to children around the country since its launch in 1992.
Councillor Patricia Bradwell (pictured below), Executive Member for Children’s Services at Lincolnshire County Council, told us: “Bookstart helps give every child a flying start in life. Books are a great way to bond with your child and beneficial for their emotional well-being and future learning. That’s why we want as many people as possible to join in the celebrations by sharing 20 books in 2012.
“You might do this by sharing picture books with your own children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews at bedtime. Alternatively, you might want to share books by reading to children in a local school or a library. The choice is yours.”
A number of famous authors and celebrities have already given the project their backing, including: Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo, Julia Donaldson, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Joanna Trollope, Michael Rosen, Hugh Dennis and Kirsty Wark.
People can show their support by picking up a ‘pledge postcard’ at their local library. Alternatively, you can make the pledge online at www.booktrust.org.uk - where you can also find out more about the Bookstart programme.
