VERSE-ATILE COUNCILLOR'S TRIUMPH

Coun Alec Depledge broke new ground for Brigg Town Council by penning a light-hearted poem to make a serious point.
I’ve been going to meetings of the authority since 1980 and can’t remember anything quite like this taking place before.
The poem went down very well and received a round of applause from fellow councillors and members of the public attending the authority’s monthly meeting in the Angel Suite.
It also fulfilled Coun Alec’s intention to get fellow town councillors to come forward and fill a number of vacancies on the Brigg Community-led Plan Committee.
With his kind permission, we reproduce the words of wisdom here – a tribute to long-serving Coun Tom Glossop, who has now stepped down after 32 years on the authority and who continues to take a keen interest in the formation of our town's Community-led Plan. This document will show how townsfolk want to see Brigg develop in the future.

THE MANTLE OF TOM
The future of Brigg concerns everyone
met in this chamber today.
The Council determined – Community Plan,
formed by town-folk – that’s the way
So, funding received, a committee conceived
and working group put into place
The ship duly launched, soon hit stormy seas
was well-nigh lost without trace
Waves of nonsense, indifference, petulance too
made progress exceedingly slow.
Some crew stayed on board, guiding her toward
the destination ’twas deemed she should go
So here I now stand, making this heart-felt plea
Whatever the party you’re from
Arise from your rear, come on volunteer
And forgive me for sounding like Tom !

Coun Alec – Minister with Brigg’s New Life Church – this week took on the additional role of Chaplain to Town Mayor Coun John Kitwood during his year in office which ends next May.

You can see the original poem and more of Alec's work through this link... ALEC'S POETRY

Our picture shows Coun Depledge giving chapter and verse to fellow councillors. Right is Coun Ann Eardley - clearly amused by the poetic interlude.
