BASH'S BEST YET, MANY THOUGHT
By Phil Allen – Brigg Amateur Social Historians
The BASH annual 1940s night VE Day celebration, “I’ll Be Seeing You…”, took
place at Brigg & District Servicemen’s Club, Coney Court, Brigg.
The event was once again a great success. Many people came in 1940s forces’
or civilian dress to add to the atmosphere. The bar staff also “did their bit” by all being in 1940 uniforms.
Paula Baldwin’s “Shiny Stockings Swing Band” and singers Christine Scott, Tony Orme and Sara Blair-Manning provided excellent musical entertainment with 1940s and some 1950s music and songs.
The dancers “Jump Jive Alive” were excellent, and their example got most of us up and dancing at some time during the evening.
People got a chance to get their breath back during a break for the buffet and raffle and then the event moved on to a very patriotic second half. The celebration moved to its close with the singing of much-loved favourites such as “Land of Hope and Glory” accompanied by an extravaganza of Union Flag waving.
At the end the band played “God Save The Queen” and everybody spontaneously stood up which was a very fitting salute to this event and the times it celebrates.
As they left, many people said that this had been the best BASH 1940 night yet!
