CHECK THE DATE WHEN BRIGG HORSE FAIR 2018 WILL BE HELD
Steeped in tradition, Brigg Horse Fair is usually held on August 5.
However, as that date falls on a Sunday in 2018, the fair will be held a day earlier, on Saturday, August 4.
This is a spectator event on Station Road that's FREE to the public.
You won't find this Linkinsheer 'Oss Fair in official guides to what's on - because it's a traditional, unofficial event that involves travellers/gypsies arriving from all parts to buy and sell steeds in time-honoured fashion.
The horses will be paraded along Station Road from outside the Hewson House offices all the way up to the former railway yard.
Much of the action, though, will go on close to the railway station. And expect to see a good number of stalls and table-top sales of lace, trinkets and horse-related items.
Those people reading this post who live well outside Brigg and fancy making their first trip to the event should be aware that it is not exactly a romantic get-together played out to the strains of classical composer Delius' famous rhapsody Brigg Fair.
You will need to watch where you put your feet with all them 'osses' about!
We expect the usual barriers to appear along Station Road to keep small children away from trotting ponies. But for safety reasons, everyone who attends needs to be wary of approaching horses and ponies.
We advise getting down between 9.30 and 10am and staying an hour or two before popping into Brigg for some welcome refreshment.
There are trains running along the Brigg line on Saturday, so folk in Sheffield, North Nottinghamshire, Gainsborough or Grimsby and Cleethorpes might like to take advantage.
Get off the train and the horse fair will be taking place just a stone's throw from the platform.
With plans approved to build housing on part of the horse fair site, could August 4, 2018 prove to be the final event at this location?
Sat Nav users can find the horse fair at DN20 8XB.
There is NO parking for cars available at, or near, the site. However, the town's main car park, on Old Courts Road, will be open and parking is free on Saturdays. It is within walking distance of the horse fair site.
