AROUND BRIGG THIS WEEK - A FEW REFLECTIONS

CYCLING IN THE TOWN CENTRE: It was pleasing to see Humberside Police officers out and about in Brigg town centre on Remembrance Sunday, although closing the roads near the Monument war memorial for the wreath-laying was undertaken by a private company and public-spirited volunteers.
Humberside Police also resumed the practice of laying a wreath in memory of The Fallen.
However, we weren't the only ones to notice that although police were about, cyclists continued to travel unchallenged through the pedestrianised town centre.
What is the point of No Cycling signs when they are ignored without action being taken against the culprits?
Look North, on BBC TV, recently did a praiseworthy piece about cycling on footways, which some Brigg Blog followers may have seen.
It was well-balanced (no pun intended) and included interviews with the Lincolnshire force and a cyclists' group spokesman.
The suggestion was that police will not take action against riders on paths unless they pose a real danger to nearby pedestrians.
Whether this is now enshrined in law or merely custom and practice isn't clear.
It could well be that different forces across the UK treat this differently.

FIREWORKS: We noted some Facebook posts complaining about people in Brigg letting off fireworks over the weekend - almost a week after November 5. These loud bangs worry many pets, particularly dogs with sharp hearing. Fireworks started to be let off in Brigg around Halloween, since when the poor pooches have endured many worrying nights. The writer asked householders to have a bit of consideration for pets. We'll have to see what New Year's Eve brings...

LET THERE BE LIGHT: For the best part of a year, Brigg Blog has commented - off and on, so to speak - about a street light being out of action on St Helen's Road, close to Hedgerow Lane, creating a gloomy zone, pictured above. When we came down this lengthy street late on Saturday night we noted that another, nearer to Bigby Road, was also on the blink. Mind how you go!
