FAMILIAR SOUND OF SPRING NOW RARE IN BRIGG

We did not assign any significance to hearing a cuckoo's distant call among the dawn chorus in Brigg the other day.
But then we chanced upon a national news report saying cuckoos are in very serious decline.
The fact we have heard just one cuckoo so far this spring is in line with this sad trend.
Loss of habitat and dangers on the migratory route from Africa are being blamed.
It is not the case that, after thousands of years, other bird species have finally got wise to the mother cuckoo depositing her egg in their nests.
