BRIGG DOCTOR OF MUSIC

Former Brigg man Cliff Turner - now retired and living in New Zealand - has kindly emailed this picture to Brigg Blog.
Cliff says some older folk in the area might remember his grandfather Charles Turner (top left)  who later had the pork butcher’s shop in  Queen Street, and the man with the moustache, William Rowbottom.
Cliff says: "Both worked as cabinet-makers for John Thomas Kettle, a prominent Brigg citizen. In addition to running a furniture shop on the corner of Elwes and Bigby Street, he was also the town’s leading undertaker and was an imposing figure as he led, on foot, corteges to the cemetery.
"William somehow achieved a doctorate in music. He was organist and choirmaster at St John’s Church when I was a choir boy in the late 1930s. He taught music at his house on Bigby Road, close to the junction of Princes Street and New Street.
"Perhaps someone will be able to explain how a cabinet-maker managed to become  a Doctor of Music.
"I do not know who the other three people are."
