A fair number of Brigg folk still use motorcycles, mopeds and scooters to commute out of town to work.
Monday (June 18) is International Ride to Work Day, when people around the globe are encouraged to ride to work on a motorbike or scooter "to demonstrate to a wider audience just how enjoyable their commute is."
Brigg Blog has been informed: "Riding to work saves time and money. It also opens up a whole new concept to many commuters – that commuting can be fun. How many people do you know who arrive at work with a smile on their face?"
A press release emailed to us on this topic set me thinking how long it is since 'yours truly' moved from motorbike to car when getting to and from the desk in Scunthorpe. The memory is a bit hazy, but perhaps it was some time in 1978.
We have no immediate plans to take a trip down memory lane next Monday.
Memories of two-wheeled commuting from Brigg are mixed. Yes, very nice in warm weather; not so good when the bike wouldn't start or the weather was wet and miserable. Many people reading this will feel the same.
It's cheaper by motorbike or scooter, compared with using a car, and less fuel is used, making two-wheeled commuting a much greener option. To find out more and to see the Ride to Work Day viral video (over 90,000 views and counting) go to www.ridetoworkday.co.uk
You can even book a free ride on a motorbike or scooter at www.geton.co.uk
