Brigg Town councillors this week took stock of the new litter-clearing contract on the River Ancholme and the annual Brigg Spring Clean, both organised by the council.
A specialist company (see picture above by KEN HARRISON) is being hired to extract litter from the Ancholme about every six weeks, through to September.
As Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee considered the progress being made, Coun Ann Eardley said of the contracting firm's recent visit to the river: "They did a good job."
Thanks were expressed for the way in which Glanford Boat Club had assisted by making facilities available as a base for the operation, and it was agreed to send a thank-you letter.
The annual Brigg Spring Clean undertaken on dry land by volunteers collected a good deal of litter and prompted Coun Eardley, who was involved on the day, to observe the high number of discarded cigarette ends to be seen in the town centre, including some of the courtyards.
She thought this related to people being unable to smoke inside businesses and going outside to do so.
Coun Eardley also considered thrown-away chewing gum to be a similar litter issue and wondered whether bins might be provided, as in Scunthorpe.
However, this was not felt to be a practical proposition. Coun Mel Oades - newly-elected chairman of the Planning Committee - said it was a question of attitude among members of society.
Coun Ben Nobbs, formerly the chairman, has stepped down after some years and is now the vice-chairman of the committee.
Other issues considered at this week's meeting of the Brigg Planning and Environment Committee in the Angel Suite Lounge included:
BUS STOP: Reference was made to a resident's request relating to the siting of a bus stop on Bridge Street - a matter for North Lincolnshire Council, the highway authority.
ROAD IMPROVEMENT SCHEME: Lincolnshire County Council is to undertake roadworks on the A1084 Bigby High Road, close to the border with North Lincolnshire, on the outskirts of Brigg, near the Garden Centre. Work will be carried out at night, from 6.30pm, during early August.
BRIGG MATTERS: The Brigg Town Council Policy Committee met that same evening in the Angel, re-electing Coun Jenny Bell as chairman for the next 12 months and electing Coun Ed Arnott to the post of vice-chairman. Councillors confirmed that they wish to continue with the regular "centrefold" about Brigg Town Council which appears in issues of the quarterly Brigg Matters newsletter, delivered to households and business premises. Brigg Matters is produced by a committee of volunteers and not by the council.
Coun Bell commented: "A lot of people read it."
