CAN YOU HELP CLEAN-UP?

Brigg Town Council is heavily involved with a campaign to clean up the river, the riverside and several town centre streets, through the collection of rubbish. Weed which clogs the River Ancholme will also be cut back several times between spring and autumn.
The project will start on Saturday, May 22 and is a joint initiative between the Town Council, North Lincolnshire Council, the Environment Agency and Ian Cawsey MP.
Businesses, voluntary organisations and townsfolk can all help. Volunteers who can spare a few hours are asked to call Brigg Town Council on 01652 659402, email enquiries@briggmarkettown.co.uk - or simply come along to the next open meeting on the topic. It's on Saturday, March 27 at the Angel Suite (11.30am).
When this issue was considered at the Town Council's latest meeting, Deputy Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs said the first weed cut on the river would be "done early" because of concern over birds nesting in the reeds. As a result, the cut would not be "bank to bank."
He said of the clean-up project: "We are hoping to involve the schools, either directly or indirectly."
Streets listed for tidying-up included Elwes Street, the Little Butchery, the Market Place, Wrawby Street and some of the courtyards, depending on the number of volunteers.
On March 27 there will be a display about the project in the Market Place Bandstand, from 10am, followed (at 11.30) by the get-together with volunteers.
North Lincolnshire Council is to provide black bags for rubbish collection, and there will be potential to recycle cans collected.
Replying to a question from Coun Ann Eardley about a 'bad area' near an industrial estate, Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard said although many other parts of the town might benefit from a clean-up, the project's immediate aim was to look at the areas visitors were most likely to see. But, if sufficient number of volunteers came forward, more might be possible.
"I think we have got to be realistic and grow it slowly," she stressed.
