BRIGG VIEWS FEATURE IN NEW LINCOLNSHIRE BOOK

One of the most interesting railway pictures ever taken in Brigg features in the newly-published book Lincolnshire Railways by Alan Stennett.
It was achieved from a lofty perch (signal post?) and shows a train-load of Massey-Ferguson balers being delivered to town in the 1960s for agricultural specialists Peacock and Binnington, who are credited as being the source of the picture.
The large British Railways good depot/shed also appears in the striking bird's eye view, together with sidings long gone.
Today there's nothing at this location but scrub.
The same picture hangs in a frame on a wall at the Dying Gladiator pub, on Bigby Street, and we can't be the only customers to admire it over the years.
There are other Brigg pictures in Alan's fine book, and a few of Brigg area interest taken from the Fisher Archive, including one of Lincolnshire-mined iron ore trains at Barnetby, photographed by Coun Ken in the early 1970s.
Lincolnshire Railways (160pp) is lavishly illustrated and costs £16.99p.
We note from the index that Brigg features on nine pages, which is a pretty good return, considering the dozens of towns and villages given links to the rail network in England's second largest county.
Ours remains, but many places saw their stations closed, and lines removed, decades ago. A good many pre-Dr Beeching.
Contact Wiltshire-based publishers Crowood Press Ltd for further details at www.crowood.com
Perhaps they'll stock Alan's book at the Tourist Information Centre in Brigg Buttercross, in due course.
