CYCLING THEME PLANNED FOR CULTURE FEST

Brigg Town Council has thrown its support behind next year’s Cultural Olympiad celebrations earmarked for the rural areas of North Lincolnshire.
Couns Mel Oades and Jenny Bell both thought it an initiative Brigg should back, when the Policy Committee considered a request.
Neil Jacques, Head of Cultural Services at North Lincolnshire Council, told Brigg councillors: “I am seeking your support for a project to promote the North Lincolnshire-wide Cultural Olympiad celebrations in 2012 in the rural wards of the area. The Cultural Olympiad is a key part of London 2012 and designed to develop links between culture and sport.
“In North Lincolnshire we have chosen the theme of cycling for exhibitions and events at Normanby Hall, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, and Scunthorpe Central Library. The cycling theme is in recognition of the Scunthorpe-based Olympic cyclist from the 1920s, Lal White, and the strong association with cycle manufacture across the area. “In addition, North Lincolnshire Museum will be hosting an exhibition, Precious Cargoes linking with the regional theme for the Cultural Olympiad.
“Other partners including CHAMP at Baysgarth Museum, Epworth Old Rectory, and Sandtoft Transport Museum, which are planning exhibitions and events to tie in with the Cultural Olympiad celebrations. Scunthorpe Co-operative Junior Choir will be leading on the production community opera celebrating Lal White.”
Neil added: “The project is to distribute a brochure to every household in the rural areas promoting the exhibitions, events and activities being planned across North Lincolnshire for the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
“The benefits are two fold. Firstly, to promote themed, area wide activities to the people of the rural wards, so that they are aware of what is on offer in their area for 2012.
“Secondly, to encourage people from across the area and tourists, to visit attractions and activities in other parts of North Lincolnshire, both in 2012 and for the longer term.
“National data shows that people’s general health and feeling of well being is increased through participation in cultural activities.
We shall be applying for LEADER funding for this work as it is beyond our current budgets to fund this additional work.
“The bidding process for LEADER funding requires evidence of consulting with rural communities.”
Neil said his authority would be extremely grateful if Brigg Town Council felt able to send a letter of support for the project, “as this will increase our chances of being successful with our bid, and delivering the benefits to your community.”
Through Falcon Cycles, on Bridge Street, Brigg has long-standing connections with the theme planned for North Lincolnshire, through Falcon Cycles, Bridge Street.

Does anyone know the route for the Sheffield to Cleethorpes Olympic torch?
Is it being routed via Brigg? If not, why not and why haven't powers- that-be protested?
