GOOD TO SEE

Just been down Wrawby Street and through the Market Place - twice - and not seen a single vehicle in the pedestrian area. Perhaps the message has finally got through.
It made a nice change from having to move aside for vehicles in Wrawby Street while holding conversations, several days apart, with first Deputy Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs and then ex-Town Mayor Coun Mike Campion.
King Canute famously failed to hold back the waves; these civic leaders failed to halt the traffic.

The story about King Canute trying to hold the tide back is generally misinterpreted.
He was a very religious man and claimed that God was more powerful than a mere king.
To prove to many of his followers who believed that King Canute was a devine being, Canute ordered the tide to retreat to demonstrate that he did not have power over God.
These actions are often re-told to suggest Canute was an idiot!
One of Canute's daughters is buried at Bosham church, near Chichester where I used to go dingy racing before I bacame a beached whale.
