Ask someone to describe a spiral staircase without the use of their hands and see what happens.

The council planners have inspected the said staircase but can't make a decision . They said this is just going round in circles.

Educational mission:
In Castles, from the bottom, which way do the spiral staircases invariable rotate? Why??

Answer to above:

Spiral staircases are/were a defefensive device.

Invariably, they spiral upwards in a clockwiswe direction.

This would allow a castle's defenders (assuming most are right-handed) to wield their swords in the open/wider section of the stairwell.

Attackers (again assuming most are right-handed) would, in contrast, have their weapon arm restricted by the narrow, confined central section of the steps.

At the end of the year there will be a history quiz and those getting less than 70 percent will have to have extra homework and miss Christmas, 2010!

Nige will undertake an English examination and another on Train Engine recognition. Cribs can be purchased from NF!!
