BRIGG BLOG'S WEEKEND REFLECTIONS - NEWS, MUSIC & SPORT

Tickets are now on sale for the next Brigg Live Arts event, which will generate plenty of local interest.
A Tribute to RAF 617 Squadron - The Dambusters will be performed by Dick Appleton and Paul Bellamy on Friday, September 30, from 7.30pm.
A very apt venue has been chosen in this context - Brigg & District Servicemen's Club, on Coney Court.
Tickets, costing £7, can be obtained from Grandad's Shed (Wrawby Street) and the Rabbit Hole book shop (Market Place).
The Dambusters flew from RAF Scampton, near Lincoln, on a daring Second World War raid in May 1943, carrying the famous 'bouncing bombs' to breach German dams and cause extensive flooding.
A film about the raid was made in the mid-1950s, featuring the highly-acclaimed Dambusters March (composed by Eric Coates).
Wing Commander Guy Gibson, the pilot who led the Dambusters, was awarded the coveted Victoria Cross.

LOCAL ATTRACTION: There was a good attendance for Brigg town centre's Totally Locally Indie Market on Saturday (August 20) with fine weather helping. The 'indie' stalls were accompanied by the traditional Saturday market offering fruit & veg, flowers and fish. Music was playing to entertain shoppers. The next Totally Locally Market will be held on Saturday, September 17.

TREE-MENDOUS: Brigg Recreation Ground was looking a picture on Saturday afternoon for the Brigg Town v Messingham 2nds cricket match.
This is the Rec's 50th year since creation by Brigg Urban District Council after it had acquired and adapted Woodbine Farm, off Wrawby Road.
Planted in the 1950s, the avenue of now mature poplar trees lining one side of the ground acts as a welcome windbreak.
Trees on the other side of the Rec (near the changing rooms) offer some shade to members of the batting side, match scorers and spectators.
One of these trees suffered recent wind damage with a couple of detached branches encroaching on the playing area - requiring removal to the other side of the boundary.
Brigg Town's cricketers tucked into teas served at the football club's EC Surfacing Stadium - a short walk away - while the Zebras were playing Harrogate.
A general shortage of umpires means Brigg Town have seen very few neutral officials at their Lincolnshire League home games this season.
So it was good to see Kev Wright, from the qualified list, on duty at the Rec on Saturday.

ILLUMINATING: We're pleased to confirm that a long out-of-action street light on St Helen's Road, Brigg, has now been fixed, although a stretch of footpath nearby remains out of bounds to pedestrians today (Monday) pending the surface being reinstated in the near future.

APPROVED: North Lincolnshire Council has granted planning permission to erect a detached garage and sunroom at Thistledo, Melton Road, Wrawby. Approval has also been given for a single-storey rear extension at 11 Hall Meadow, Bonby.

NEEDING ATTENTION: The hardcore area at East Park, Brigg, near the Monument roundabout, could do with some remedial re-surfacing when council funds permit, especially near the Tintab public seating shelter, we suggest.

PICTURED: The Dambusters, from Brigg Live Arts; Saturday's 'indie' market; cricket umpire Kev Wright in conversation with Brigg Town's Stuart Smith at the halfway stage in the game at the Rec; and shade offered by one of the tall trees.
