The go ahead has been given to make changes to the landmark Angel building in Brigg Market Place which houses the library, heritage centre, community advice hub, council offices and the Cafe Courtyard.
Planning permission has been granted to North Lincolnshire Council to make internal alterations, erect a canopy at the rear and formulate a new opening within the arch canopy, including associated works.
A new entry door will be installed to one side of the current front entrance. It will replace a window with brickwork (see picture above).
The aim is to create a new entrance which will not be an intrusive feature of the Market Place.
The Angel - owned and operated by North Lincolnshire Council - is NOT a listed building.
A detailed planning officer's assessment report recommended approving this application, which attracted no adverse comments from the general public or other consultees.
The report explained: "The Angel is a building containing a host of services and facilities to serve the community of Brigg and tourists to the area. The proposal will create a more user-friendly and functional building on the site to support residents and tourists to Brigg.
"In terms of the impact on the Conservation Area and adjacent listed buildings, the council’s heritage officer has been consulted on the application and raises no objections, subject to a condition in relation to signage which will be imposed on the planning permission.
"The proposed alterations - by virtue of the size and design - will not result in a detrimental impact on the building and the adjoining area/buildings. The proposal will conserve and enhance the character and appearance of the building."
The report added that a "more functional building" would be created.
In granting planning permission, a condition was attached: "All new exterior signage shall be constructed from painted sheet aluminium." This is "in order to preserve and enhance the Conservation Area." Plastic had been initially suggested.
Consulted about the application, the council's conservation officer told planners: "There is no objection to the alteration to the entrance lobby as there is no impact on the key front elevation that faces the Market Place - the key public experience. The new door matches materials in the lobby and, coloured grey, will have an attractive appearance suitable for the building."
