'Spruce up' = make neat an tidy; dapper looking
Origin: Certain goods/commodities came from Prussia at the turn of the C14th/C15th...fir tree, quality leather and etc.
The fir trees were called Prussian Fir, which quickly became Pruce Fir, evolving into Spruce Fir.
Similarly the quality leather became Pruce Leather, then Spruce Leather.
At this time it was fashionable to make Spruce Leather into smart, bespoke jerkins. To wear such a garment one was considered to be 'Spruced up' - smart and dandy.
