FIRST-TIMERS COME ON DOWN

We spotted this sign in the window of DDM estate agents in Wrawby Street, Brigg, and thought we should do our bit to publicise the First Time Buyer Evening that’s on the horizon. Especially as getting a foot on the property ladder must be tough for many local youngsters in today’s economic climate.
Hopefully, DDM will keep us posted when the date is fixed.

As somebody of the age to which this is supposed to appeal, I have two things to say:

1) Property is not a "ladder" from low to high value houses. It's a place to live, build a family, find stability. Young people are not missing out on an investment, but a chance to start their lives properly.

2) The problem is not the current economic climate, but the one just gone. First time buyers don't have difficulties because their incomes are too low, but because prices are too high.

.....one sobering thought is that while an increasing number of houses emerge onto the auction market, the likelihood is that an increasing number of families have lost their main investment and face massive life changes. While it offers an opportunity for some, others have dropped off the end.

Middle-aged folk like "yours truly" feel great sympathy for young people today who are trying to get their own place.
