BRAZIERS COME TO LIGHT AGAIN

Brigg Blog is wondering whether these long-forgotten features of the Brigg skyline might come back to prominence this year.
Many passers-by will never have noticed them, despite the fact these tall metal structures have been standing sentinel, close to the town centre, for 18 years.
The braziers – brasiers are something entirely different! – are next to North Lincolnshire Council’s Brigg headquarters, Hewson House, at the junction of Bigby Street, Albert Street and Station Road.
North Lincolnshire Council’s spokesman tells us: “They were put up to mark the start of the EC (European Community) and lit on 1 January, 1993 along with braziers all over Europe.
“They were meant to represent the area's ties with Europe and that's why there is the coat of arms on there.
“We think they were also used for the Millennium (2000) and maybe some other events.”
Now Brigg Blog is wondering whether the braziers might be lit again as a way of North Lincolnshire, and Brigg, marking the forthcoming Royal Wedding.
The powers-that-be might consider a small ceremony, perhaps involving the North Lincolnshire Mayor and Brigg’s own first citizen. The nearby trees would need trimming back, but that does not seem a major job.
What do you think? Is it worth considering?
I thought the structures might date back as far as the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, or could have been installed to mark Glanford borough's twinning with Gifhorn, Germany.
Wrong on both counts; age must be catching up with me!
