REMINDER ABOUT TOMORROW
Brigg Town Council's Planning and Environment Committee meets tomorrow (Monday) at 6.45pm in the Angel Suite, off Exchange Place, followed by the monthly "full meeting" of the Council at 7.30pm.
Both are open to the public.

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL...
It’s some weeks since this wall on Bridge Street, alongside the A18, was demolished in an accident. Presumably the repair work is on a North Lincolnshire Council list. No rush – just a gentle reminder to the powers-that-be it’s in a prominent location as drivers come into Brigg. We aren't sure whether it's actually within the Conservation Area, but if not it must be very close indeed.
Rather than pass by on the other side of the road, Brigg Blog thought we'd play the Good Samaritan, this being Sunday, the Lord's Day, and make a plea for progress.
Here endeth the lesson!

THINKING OUT OF THE BOX
Further to our earlier post about discarded pizza boxes on Brigg streets, we spotted two more this morning – one near the Britannia Inn, on Wrawby Street, and the other in the middle of St Helen’s Road.
The pizza box near the Britannia had been tossed aside within a few yards of the large green litter bin adjoining the Tintabs, on East Park.
Which makes you wonder what more the council can do.

FIRST-TIMERS COME ON DOWN
We spotted this sign in the window of DDM estate agents in Wrawby Street, Brigg, and thought we should do our bit to publicise the First Time Buyer Evening that’s on the horizon. Especially as getting a foot on the property ladder must be tough for many local youngsters in today’s economic climate.
Hopefully, DDM will keep us posted when the date is fixed.

TONIC ADDITION TO EX-SURGERY
These attractive railings which we consider to be in keeping with the Conservation Area have gone up at the Cedars – the large detached building on Bigby Road, close to the Monument – which is being converted into offices.
This building has enjoyed various uses down the decades, including private house, doctors’ surgery and health clinic.

BOX THEIR EARS?
Along the lines of “How long is a piece of string?” Brigg Blog asks: “How long does it take to eat a pizza?”
This picture would seem to suggest that if you buy a takeaway and walk steadily you can negotiate Wrawby Road, almost as far as Churchill Avenue, before everything’s consumed.
We aren’t having a go at Brigg pizza houses, or other fast food outlets; it’s not their fault if customers can’t be bothered to take the wrappers home with them and merely discard them to litter our streets.
This wasn’t the only “used” pizza box we spotted the other day during a stroll round town, by any means.
North Lincolnshire Council collects litter in the town centre, but you can’t expect its tidying-up team to visit all our outlying streets, including Wrawby Road, close to Churchill Avenue.

REPAIRS ON THE RIGHT ROAD
The prolonged and nasty cold spell this winter has left North Lincolnshire highways staff with a mountain of pothole repairs. This picture shows one of four holes which were to be avoided on just a short stretch of St Helen’s Road, Brigg, until the council got round to filling them in the other day.
You can check what’s being repaired, and when, in your locality by visiting this section of the North Lincolnshire Council website:

ADDED PAGES OF COMMUNITY INTEREST
The Brigg Community-led Plan website has just been updated with three additional pages.
Thanks to Coun Alec Depledge for the update.
Local volunteers working on the Plan are talking to residents, groups and businesses to address a wide range of issues in ways that are meaningful to the community itself.
They want to know:
What you think is good in Brigg
What’s bad
What’s missing
What you want to see developed.
The finished Plan - many months in the future - will be made available to households in written form and also online.
Our picture shows Ken Harrison, a member of the Brigg Community-Led plan committee, during the launch at the Angel Suite last September, when members of the public were invited to go along and make their thoughts known on Brigg.

GOLDEN MEMORIES OF BRIGG
TOP DAY OUT BY TRAIN FROM BRIGG
From The Friends of the Barton Line
(Their report very kindly being shunted on to Brigg Blog by our own station supporter Jim Allcroft)
Some members of the Friends of the Barton Line caught a Saturday train from Brigg and had a most enjoyable day in Sheffield.
On arriving at Sheffield the party retired to The Tap, which is on Platform 1B, for a drink and a bite to eat. The Tap was the First Class Refreshment Room which, after many years of neglect and closure, has been lovingly brought back into use and much of the original fabric and many fittings have been retained whilst items which were deemed to be beyond repair have been carefully replaced or replicated in keeping with the original décor and is a Grade 2 listed building by English Heritage.
The Tap has more than twenty cask-conditioned real ales and it lists 214 bottled beers being available and can offer a selection of snack foods.
Although the weather was damp, two members took the opportunity to visit the Winter Gardens which was built as part of the Sheffield Regeneration Project and is a large temperate greenhouse with over 2000 varieties of tropical plants.
Why not take the opportunity to use the train and visit Sheffield, whether it be to visit other attractions or just a shopping trip to the city centre which is close by?
Or catch a tram just outside the station for Meadowhall.
Or take a trip (in the other direction) to Grimsby or Cleethorpes.
Trains run only on a Saturday to the following timetable:
To Sheffield
Cleethorpes 11.33 15.21 19.13
Grimsby Town 11.21 15.28 19.20
Habrough 11.31 15.38 19.30
Barnetby 11.40 15.48 19.39
Brigg 11.46 15.53 19.45
Kirton Lindsey 11.55 16.02 19.54
Sheffield 13.23 17.23 21.22
To Grimsby/Cleethorpes
Sheffield 08.03 12.00 16.00
Kirton Lindsey 09.10 13.13 17.14
Brigg 09.19 13.22 17.23
Barnetby 09.38 13.37 17.37

KEEP BRIGG TIDY
Brigg Town Council has funded a new litter bin at the top of Atherton Way, close to the turn into Almond Grove, the Donkey Field play area and the roundabout near Tesco.
Hopefully it will be used by those motorists who park up in the lay-by near the Barnard Avenue bungalows and those people returning to the Newlands and Chartdale estates with fast food - wrapped in boxes, cartons and paper - after a night out in the town centre.
Please help to keep Brigg tidy!

'SPEND A PENNY OR TWO ON TOILETS'
The East Park public conveniences, near Brigg’s Monument war memorial, have been closed since December after suffering burst pipes during the exceptionally cold weather.
But after hearing how ‘caught short’ members of the public were now having to ask to use the facilities in nearby offices, Brigg Town Council thinks it’s high time the WCs were back in business.
They are owned and operated by North Lincolnshire Council, and Coun Penny Smith told fellow Brigg councillors that the unitary authority ought to make reopening the toilets a priority, given the length of time they had already been closed.

'BATLE' GROUP FIGHTS ON
From David Rose,
Chair of the Action Group
The campaign to oppose the planned expansion of the Tesco store in Brigg has stepped up a gear with new fears raised about the future prospects for the Thursday market in the town.
A recent survey of market traders has revealed that a number plan to cease trading in Brigg and others anticipate the demise of the regular weekly market as a result of any expansion of the town’s Tesco store. There are also fears that a number of local shops are expecting to close.
Further concerns have been raised about the volume of traffic that the expanded store would generate in addition to an increase in the number and size of the delivery lorries.
A survey is currently being undertaken by the Action Group who argue strongly that the current plans issued by Tesco seriously underestimate the increased problem of noise, congestion and pollution.
The Action Group BATLE have already presented a petition from 700 local residents opposed to the planned supermarket expansion and are now stepping up their action ahead of North Lincs Planning Committee considering the plans, with leaflets distributed across the town.
Chair of the Action Group, David Rose commented: “An increasing number of local people are now realising the detrimental impact that an expanded Tesco store will have on local shops and market traders, not to mention the visual impact of a large supermarket on the historic market town.”
NF adds: The matter is still being considered by North Lincolnshire Council, to whom Tesco has submitted its plans for build a new store about twice the size of the current one (off Barnard Avenue/Cary Lane) by knocking down the existing Lidl premises, off Spring's Way. Lidl is seeking permission to build a new store on Atherton Way, close to the roundabout on the A18. Tesco has promised scores of new jobs. The increase in vehicles resulting from additional customers and traffic flows along Barnard Avenue, notably at the junction with Cary Lane and Ash Grove, are central issues. North Lincolnshire Council is the highway authority, responsible for roads, as well as the body which decides planning applications.

PLANNING CHANGES PLANNED
One of the public notices announced the proposed changes - this one being near the junction of Albert Street and New Street.
Dwelling houses within Brigg’s Conservative Area are included in a change of procedures proposed by North Lincolnshire Council.
The Conservative Area stretches from Bridge Street, through the Market Place and Wrawby Street to Bigby Street, Bigby Road and Albert Street, plus a short stretch of Wrawby Road. The streets and courts in between are also included.
The proposed change means “certain types of development” – including enlargement, improvement, alteration or even exterior painting – will require planning permission to be obtained from the council. However, no fee will be charged.
The council wishes to ensure “certain types of development” may not be carried out “without a grant of planning permission from the date it comes into effect.”
Before you read the actual proposal (below) being made by the council, note that any objections must be made by members of the public not later than February 24.
If no objections are lodged by that date, “The Direction” will come into effect on March 24.
The Town and County Planning (General Permitted Development Order) has been with us since 1995 – 16 years - as have all the houses in the town centre. So why take action now? Especially as there’s no charge being levied.
Laminated copies of what follows have been posted at various locations across the town centre. Just before you read it, note that you can inspect the official paperwork – your democratic right. However, despite this being a Brigg issue, interested members of the public will have to go to Scunthorpe to do so. Why not Brigg Library, Hewson House or the Angel Suite Courtyard? The council quite rightly makes much of Link, through which many of its services can be accessed in one office - so why not official documents of a planning nature relating to the heart of Brigg?

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND!
There may well be a lot less "dog muck" about on Brigg's footpaths and grass verges these days, but why do so many of those who clean up after their pets have to put the resulting "material" in see-through or very lightly coloured plastic bags? Not a pretty sight! Especially as some of them carry it all the way home for disposal if they can't find a doggie bin nearby.
Using dark-coloured bags to hide the contents shouldn't prove too difficult.
If we can have well-intentioned by-laws relating to dog-fouling and keeping pets under control, how about extending it one stage to include a stipulation that "doggie do" should not be on view during "walkies" sessions in public places?
We aren't advocating more council staff to enforce this addition, who would then be dubbed "The Poo Police" in the national press. No, we don't want it to be seen as a case of jobbies for the boys!
We are just suggesting you should be able to walk Brigg streets, munching a bag of chips, without having your appetite ruined by the sight of an approaching pet owner, dog at heel, swinging a see-through bag weighed down by certain unsavoury objects at the bottom, so to speak.

LIDL RINGS CHANGES
Lidl Supermarket, Springs Parade, Brigg, is seeking planning consent to display a wall-mounted hoarding sign. That will be considered by North Lincolnshire Council in the near future.
Inside the store, things have just had a revamp to make way for a fresh bakery section. For stick-in-the-muds like me it will take a big of getting used to, trying to locate where favourite items are now on display. But the beer selection is still on the far aisle as you go in.

COUNCIL ON RIGHT TRACK
It was raining pretty heavily on Sunday and yet the revamped public footpath between Yarborough Road and Churchill Avenue showed no sign of surface water, even during “February Filldyke” weather.
North Lincolnshire Council had the walkway improved not too long ago and that has paid off for the relatively few folk who use it.
Some long-serving residents in this part of town know it as Clothes Hedge Footpath. For in decades past, before the St Helen’s Road housing estate really took off, housewives hung out the washing thereabouts.
Groups of ramblers can be seen from time to time traversing this very narrow public footpath. Good look to them in helping to retain this right of way, but there are more walkable alternatives very close by via St James’ Road and O’Hanlon Avenue.
If I’m anything to go by, “Joe Public” would not fancy traversing Clothes Hedge Footpath, even through the heavy, boggy stretches have gone.

BOATS BEWARE
This tree has been in the Old River Ancholme, near the White Hart, for some days now. Doubtless someone in authority will have it safely removed before too long. Ancholme Rowing Club members will be able to steer round it OK.

HOPING FOR A ROARING SUCCESS
Brigg District Lions are hoping to stage a summer fair in the town centre on Sunday, June 12 - and preliminary details have been revealed to town councillors.
Those Brigg shops wishing to open that Sunday, to take advantage of an influx of visitors to the town centre, will be welcome to do so.
Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard told councillors the summer fair would be a major event to benefit the town.
She stressed the Lions still intended to hold their usual town centre Christmas fair, with its wide range of stalls, in early December.
Last year's Christmas fair and lights switch-on had to be cancelled due to heavy snow, but here's a picture from an earlier one to remind Brigg Blog followers what a good event it is.

MOLES MAKE EARTH MOVE
Moles are causing problems at Brigg Town Council’s Grammar School Road allotments site and in the grounds of nearby St Mary’s RC School, where the surface is being disturbed by the excavationary activity of the little critters.
Town councillors, who oversee management of the allotments, have a specialist firm they can call in to get rid of rats, if there's evidence of any about near the plots. But Town Clerk Jeanette Woollard explained moles were not classed as vermin.
NF adds: We used to get problems with moles, from time to time, at the Brigg Sugar Factory sportsground, when Brigg Town Cricket Club's first team played there. The mounds of earth they pushed up to the surface became a bit of an issue on the outfield, but I can't recall that the closely-cut "square" was affected at any time. These days, of course, the old factory sportsground, just over the border into Scawby Brook, is abandoned and unused, together with the clubhouse. So the moles can have the place all to themselves, if they wish.

FINAL STAGE IN MONUMENT REFURBISHMENT
Brigg Town Council wants to complete the refurbishment of the Monument before the end of the financial year (early April).
The intended revamp of the landmark structure was completed prior to Remembrance Day in November. But during the work a long-forgotten Brigg crest, circa 1920, was unearthed on the rear of the war memorial, facing Bigby Road, during the cleaning process (at the very top of our picture).
The Town Council decided the crest should also be restored and is now seeking to get an agreeable price for this to be done as the final stage of the worthwhile community project. That seems to be taking a bit longer than expected. But, hopefully, agreement can be reached in the near future and stonemasons will soon be on site to attend to the crest and restore its prominence.

STILL ONE CHARITY SHOP DOWN
Brigg's RSPCA charity shop suffered more than most during the bad weather and is still out of action, as the sign below explains. We hope it will reopen soon and resume raising money to help needy animals. It's situated close to the riverbank, adjoining the Spring's Parade car park and a stone's throw from the County Bridge. We hope to let you know when things are back to normal.
MOST MODERN HOME IN BRIGG
This mobile home became Brigg's newest property on Tuesday when it was delivered to Mill Lane. It needed all the driver's skill to negotiate the turn off Bridge Street. But eventually it was a case of mission accomplished, rather than mission impossible.
