BRIGG HONOURS BEFORE COUN WALTHAM'S M.B.E.

During the June meeting of Brigg Town Council held on Monday evening, Coun Rob Waltham  was congratulated on being honoured with the MBE - Member of the British Empire - by Coun Donald Campbell, Deputy  Town Mayor.
As soon as Coun Donald had passed on his best wishes for this recently announced award ,we began to think of other people with Brigg connections who have gained honours in past years.
Brian Taylor, with whom we served as a governor of Sir John Nelthorpe School, also received the MBE a few years ago. He was  a Justice of the Peace in Brigg and Scunthorpe.
Brigg Grammar School and SJN senior governor Robin Sumpter was also honoured, with the OBE.
Joseph J. Magrath - clerk to Brigg Urban District Council and Brigg Town Council - received the OBE. He was a national figure in road safety.
Senior Scunthorpe steelworks manager Raymond Raby, who lived in Brigg, received either the OBE or the MBE, as did Brigg-based traffic policeman Derrick Thomas.
On Remembrance Sunday we see some Brigg residents proudly displaying their military medals, some being Falklands and Gulf War veterans or having served in Northern Ireland during The Troubles.
Lt Col Roger Nelthorpe held the TD - Territorial Army decoration.
He lived at Scawby Hall and was the long-serving chairman of governors at Sir John Nelthorpe School and a prominent Brigg magistrate when we still had a court sitting in the town.
Did Roy O'Neill, chair of governors at SJN for many years, also receive an honour?
It woud have been pre-Brigg Blog. We seem to think he did.
Apologies  if we have failed to mention someone.
