ANGLERS ENJOY VISIT TO BRIGG

Many anglers came to Brigg today (Wednesday) to fish a match on the Old River Ancholme, on what we think they still call the Spring's Stretch - a throwback to when the major preserves factory was still going strong.
On a noticeboard near the towpath there was reference to the Scunthorpe and District Angling Association and Appleby-Frodingham Angling Club.
Many of the competitors had parked up in the roughly-surfaced area behind Riverside Surgery.
Many decades ago, when half-day closing was almost universal in Brigg, many shopworkers used their half-day off (Wednesday) to engage in sporting pursuits. There was a local Wednesday football league, and some teams included Wednesday in their names.
In addition, Brigg Grammar School closed at noon on Wednesdays and boys were required to attend school on Saturday morning. This archaic practice did not end until July 1968. We were there on that momentous day - one to relish and celebrate. How we hated Saturday morning school!
