When I joined the air cadets ( circa 1960) - I think Pontius was a Pilate at the time, I was issued with a uniform that had a label indicating it was made in 1937. The jacket buttoned all the way to the neck....the trousers were designed to wear with puttees and their waist band came up to my chest.
We were dead smart..marching about with our drill-purpose .303 Lee Enfield rifles.
It certainly impressed the local young ladies, well some 14 year local lasses, who use to gather around the fence.
We told them that we were going to be jet fighter pilots...and, using our bus fare home, bought them a 6d bag of chips after parade night.
In reality. they fancied the chips more than us lads ......and years later, things just haven't changed.....and I still have to walk home!!!
