BRIGG TOWN FC IN LINCOLN DERBY ACTION

Brigg Town FC have a local derby today (Saturday, January 3), visiting Lincoln United in the Evo-Stik League Division One South.
Ther Zebras are at the foot of the table, while Lincoln are ninth.
Kick-off at the Ashby Avenue ground, in the county capital, will be at 3pm.
Brigg are six points adrift of the two teams above them so a win today will be vitally important.

Why 'Derby'?
It seems that the name has strong connections to Lord Derby cf the Stanley family of Knowsley Hall in the C18th.
The then Lord Derby lent his name, patronage and sponsorship to a number of sporting events - ie The Derby horse race, but the Stanley family was also involved in such sports as hockey and football.
Consequently, any major sporting event was called a 'Derby'....now, as time has evolved, it is usually confined to a sporting contest between local teams.
Lord Derby/Stanley family are significant in my native Liverpool...and it's interesting to note that Stanley Park separates Goodison Park (Everton) and Anfield, the ground of the best footie team in the whole-wide universe - Good ol' Steve..and Liverpool...
History notes:
Everton - previously known as St Mungo's - established as a youth club team by a RC priest...
Liverpool - previously known as Everton (2nd Team)....

A good sporting question for a pub quiz....
What was Everton FC's first football home ground?

Answer: Anfield Park - following a dispute, Everton FC moved to Goodison and Liverpool FC was established at Anfield.
