REPORT AND PICTURE FROM GRAHAM AUSTIN
The March Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) talk was given by Pat Smith and Stephen Rimmington at Brigg and District Servicemen's Club.
Pat’s talk was about the Crosby Angel in Scunthorpe and the men whose names are on the memorial.
The Friends of Crosby Angel were formed and research work was done to identify the men named and how they found out information about their short lives, their families and finally where they are buried.
Pat described in detail how the research was carried out and also showed pictures of Crosby as it was when the Angel was erected. The groups hard work led to the publication of a book and the first sales were enough to have the Angel restored and eventually re dedicated.
Proceeds from sales now go to Help the Heroes and The Royal British Legion.
Stephen gave a talk about his relative Jack Rimmington and what had happened to him and about his eventual death.
Jack is one of the names on the Angel and during his life he lived 15 miles from his cousin and in death they are buried 15 miles apart in France. His cousin also having lost his life in that terrible war.
The next presentation will be on Tuesday April 3 and given by Dr Geoffrey Duffield.
It is called "Shapes do not just happen - They are made" covering Victorian to 1950s Foundation Wear.
