Local councils should ideally reflect the make-up of society. And Brigg Town Council does that in terms of new technology.
The Policy Committee holds regular reviews of how the Town Council presents itself on the internet, through its own website – www.briggmarkettown.co.uk – plus the use of Flckr and Facebook to make information available.
Discussions at the committee's latest meeting indicated some councillors, particularly the younger ones, are very familiar with online social networking; some councillors use the internet and email, but are not exactly devotees of social networking; and a minority of elected representatives are not connected to the worldwide web at all.
Town Mayor Coun Ben Nobbs, who uses the net and email widely, admitted to his colleagues: “I look at Facebook occasionally, but it’s not something I use regularly.”
Coun Julian Kidd added: “Facebook is very good.”
Meanwhile, Couns Ed Arnott and James Truepenny are very knowledgeable about Flickr, Facebook and similar online technology and are always consulted whenever this topic is discussed at committee meetings.
