STORE OF BRIGG MEMORIES FROM 10 YEARS AGO

Much has been done down the decades to retain some, if not all, aspects of historic Brigg, and today's town centre would be recognised by folk who lived here 100 years ago - even though some of the buildings have been modified and changed ownership, and perhaps use, many times.

Ten years ago, in spring 2008, the premises previously occupied by national retailer Shoefayre were being transformed into a plush bakery shop.
We wrote back then: "The rundown state of the former Shoefayre shop, which even had a tree growing out of the chimney, drew complaints from passers-by and councillors.
"However, bakery chain Cooplands has totally transformed the Dutch-style building."

The Kwik Save store, on Cary Lane, was closed and up for sale in March 2008. It now houses Wilko.

Brigg Blog went down to the railway station area in 2008 to take a picture of where the 'coal drops' had been prior to demolition in the late 1990s.

For decades, coal from Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire pits was brought in rail wagons to sidings at this location to be bagged and loaded onto lorries for delivery to local households.
Today - 20 years since the brick-built 'drops' were knocked down - this area still awaits redevelopment.
Sometimes the wheels can turn slowly...

In April  2008, Brigg Blog reported on a public meeting about improving rail transport we had attended in the Angel Suite.
Our piece was headed On board with campaign and explained that there had been a good turn-out, with a renowned railway author and historian among the assembled gathering.
It's interesting to re-read what was said and by whom, in the light of how things have progressed in recent years.
We concluded our 2008 piece by observing: "After the meeting closed, many people stayed on to talk about railway matters in the Angel Suite, while others visited Brigg shops, the Saturday market and local pubs. So holding the public meeting in Brigg helped put trade the way of a number of local businesses."

On the evening of May 9, 2008  The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane made a memorable flypast over the town, with three passes to mark the Brigg Amateur Social Historians (BASH) 1940s Night at the Servicemen's Club.
Scores of Brigg folk turned out to watch the flypast, many from the Old Courts Road car park adjoining the Servicemen's Club. The venue was decorated with patriotic flags.

Well-known actress Wendy Craig paid Brigg a visit to launch a new development in the town.
The star of series like Butterflies and The Royal was here to officially open Golden Living's Ancholme Mews development on a sunny farmers' market Saturday.
The 2008 cricket season saw us post pictures of Brigg Town's first team against East Halton and the midweek side which took on Owmby.
We also featured Broughton 2nds during one of their home games.
