BRIGG TREES HAVE SEEN SOME SIGHTS!

This avenue of mature poplar trees at Brigg Recreation Ground has formed a backdrop to football, cricket and hockey matches for decades.
We are pleased to see that they remain part of the scene at The Rec where extensive refurbishment of sporting facilities is taking place at present.

Immediately above and below are pictures of a small grassed area between the houses in South View Avenue and the Recreation Ground.
This was where many of us, as children, honed our skills at football and cricket with matches among ourselves during  the 1960s and 1970s.
It was a case of coats for goalposts when it came to football, as Brigg Urban District Council did not run to the expense of providing any wooden frames.
The play area was divided from the Rec by a chain-metal fence, topped with barbed wire.
Its aim was to deter youngsters from using the two nearby council-run pitches without paying the charges imposed on teams like Brigg Amateurs, Bowness and Gray, Wrawby Athletic and Brigg Servicemen.
Great care had to be taken while playing cricket on this "ground" for fear of breaking windows in the South View houses or damaging the asbestos garages at the prefabs on Woodbine Grove.
The council's concerns about damage to property caused by cricket balls sounds a bit hollow when we consider that the entire prefab estate was demolished a few years later - by the local authority!
