For young people, who are leaving school or college this summer, getting good quality independent and impartial careers information advice and guidance has never been more important.
Careers guidance from a qualified careers adviser allows young people to explore their ideas, the reasons behind their choices, explore the routes in these choices, and suggest some alternative or new ideas. It will lead to a plan of action on what needs to be done next and sources of information to look at. It’s all designed to help young people make informed choices about their future.
There are lots of other sources of careers information that young people can access as well:
The National Careers Service https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk/ and Lincs4u www.lincs4u.co.uk websites.
Information on jobs and education/training from colleges, universities or employers.
Young people can get advice from people who know them well, such as teachers and parents about what career might suit them.
In December the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) produced a guide to the ’40 top jobs of the future’ for parents, teachers and careers advisers. Using the most recent occupational research, the guide showcases the jobs that will be crucial over the next decade.

The council’s team of qualified careers advisers work with young people aged 13 to 19 (and up to 25 years-old for those with learning difficulties and disabilities) in schools and colleges. And with young people who have left education and are not in employment, education or training (NEET) through a drop-in service.
The team provides careers guidance to young people who fall into certain groups in all the secondary schools in North Lincolnshire.
They also work in partnership with the following schools to help them meet their new duty to provide all students with access to independent and impartial careers guidance:
- Baysgarth School, Barton
- Frederick Gough School, Bottesford
- Huntcliff School, Kirton Lindsey
- Melior Community Academy, Scunthorpe
- Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg
- The St Lawrence Academy, Scunthorpe
- Axholme Academy
- Winterton Community Academy
