CALL FOR PEST CONTROL TO DEAL WITH PIGEON PROBLEM IN BRIGG TOWN CENTRE

Pigeons on the roof of a building in Brigg town centre - see Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog, January 2019

Problem-causing pigeons in Brigg had town councillors in something of a flap at the January meeting.
Following on from previous debates about messy pigeon droppings littering town centre pavements, Coun Chris Dyson raised the issue again.
He asked fellow councillors to consider putting money in the budget to get to grips with this problem.
Coun Dyson, who lives in the centre of the town, reported huge numbers of pigeons and called for what he called pest control.
Noting the "absolutely disgusting" soiling of paving on Wrawby Street in particular, he urged: "We need to put money away for this."
Town Clerk Dinah Lilley noted that some alleyways were also affected.
Coun Jane Kitching called on businesses with pigeon mess on the pavements near their frontages to consider cleaning it up.
Coun Rob Waltham said these birds were strays, not racing pigeons, and stressed this was not a new issue. He recalled, years ago, when hundreds of birds lived in the old, disused Yarborough Mills (since demolished).
Coun Waltham, who is the leader of North Lincolnshire Council, suggested the unitary authority would undertake a clean up - details to be given later to the Town Council.

it's up to the owners where pigeon's roost to remove them

Of course they are not racing Pigeons, they are feral pigeons....and the reason that flocks gather in town centres (anytown) is because that is where food is......
The most effective way controlling their number is food depreciation...so have a blitz on folks dropping food litter.
Culling, netting, poisoning are only effective for a shout time..those feral pigeons that are left behind only breed more and within a season, or two, pigeon numbers have recovered.
Another method that has proved successful is to offer the feral pigeons a more attractive location away from the town centre.
Especially built pigeon lofts in some isolated location, at which they are purposely fed allows the flock to group in a rural-type area and during the breeding season their number is controlled by selective egg collection.
But the latter may be too complicated
for the folks who focus on the flaws of culling....

Yes Ken

Culling, netting and poisoning would be effective for a short time. A bit extreme though. I suggest fines should be tried first, for littering. Litter annoys most folk much more than pigeon mess.

#Yes, I support the idea of litter reduction....BUT we do increasingly feed the pigeons inadvertently.
Even if Litter, including food litter was eradicated from the town centre, Brigg has evolved a contents cafe culture with more outlets offering pavement tables...consequently, more than the odd morsel will be dropped/left in such areas and it doesn't take the opportunist birds from
devouring such delights.
It would be perhaps impossible to stop some food litter from entering the town's food chain...and the feral pigeon population will become proportional to the amount of available food about the town. Indeed, the number of feral pigeons about Brigg is comparatively small...there isn't a swarm as many people surmise, but it doesn't take many pigeons to create a mess, particularly below their favourite perching spots.
However, food deprecation is probably the most effective method of pigeon population, although reducing the number of hatching eggs would offer another very effective measure - but, at the moment, this would prove to be a very dangerous activity given the pigeons' precarious nesting places on and in roof spaces.
Diverting the pigeons to another location with ample pickings of food and designed nesting stations could allow selective egg collection during the breeding season and prove to be a site that the pigeons to roost away from the human/urban population.
