BRIGG SPORTING TREASURE
With an exhibition coming up later this year at Brigg Heritage Centre to celebrate the history of sport in the town, we were interested to receive two photographs out of the blue - by email.
They show a medal/pendant awarded to a Hett Cup footballer during the 1912/13 season.
This is particularly significant, being the very first year of this prestigious competition.
The silver trophy was inscribed as follows:
The Hett Football Charity Cup
Brigg and District Nursing Institution
Presented by F.C. Hett Esq.
Season 1912-13
The owner of the pendant, who lives in the south, tells us it was acquired from an antique shop in Beverley by way of a birthday present. The initials are a later addition.
Frank C. Hett was a very prominent figure in Brigg - being a solicitor and clerk to the guardians who ran the Workhouse - and we know that the trophy in 1913 was won by Brigg Football Club.
So we presume the medal pictured here was presented to a member of the successful team.
The Hett Cup was brought back into use a few years ago - after a long absence - with local clubs competing in ties at The Hawthorns - Brigg Town FC.
Below - the Hett Cup photographed in the Hawthorns clubhouse after one of the recent finals hosted by Brigg Town FC
