Some semi-official, and official info indicates that the 'raft' - I prefer to call it the Bronze Age sewn, plank boat - was excavated in 1973.
In fact, it was unearthered initially in 1888...then recovered.
In the autumn of 1973, some simple exploratory slit trenches were dug by the team to confirm its location and extent....and again filled it to await further investigation.....
In the spring of 1974, the team uncovered the boat again...carefully cut it in sections and excavated the 'raft'.
Old Nige remembers visiting the site (near the Glanford Boat Club house) when he was a young shaver (in short pants?) in the 6th Form at BGS - methinks that such an occasion must have been in spring '74....
2014 will be the boat's 40th anniversary after its excavation - and blinking heck.....that makes old Nige really old!!!
