INVESTING IN FUTURE

Two pictures of the newly repainted White Horse, in Wrawby Street, Brigg. This is one of our oldest hostelries, so it's good to see investment being made. It looks impressive - a job well done.
Many of us have spent happy hours - and even Happy Hours - in this pub down the years. Note the use of the lower case "w" and "h" on the signs. That's the modern way, of course, but what would dear old Ted Dodd, long-serving news editor of the Lincolnshire Times at nearby No 57, have made of the disappearance of capital letters on proper nouns? Doddy often popped in at the White Horse for a pint on his way home to St Helen's Road from the office, and it was usually 9pm before he stopped bashing away at the keys on his old typewriter (no computers then, of course). More archive pictures of Brigg Horse Fair - showing steeds, traders and spectators outside the White Horse - have now been unearthed. We will be featuring some in an issue of the Scunthorpe Telegraph's Nostalgia magazine, possibly in August, which is Horse Fair month.

I hope the someone has retained the old sign.....it could be auctioned for charity.

Apart from the outside, the inside is being changed. They've removed the odd half-wooden floor in the bar.

I was with Chris Witty and when we peered thro' the bar window, we found ourselves looking into the eyes of a young lady looking out!
I think my ugly mug may have startled her.

As an aside....when is someone going to paint the water pump in GSR South?

ps Nige, the English language...syle, vocab., meaning and spelling...is dynamic.
It seems that to present proper nouns in lower case is currently in vogue - see itv and others.....and there's ambiguity in auch proper nouns as...the bible, sun , the universe, the government, even god !!!!
Anyway, why should, 'white horse' have initial caps. The criterion for a proper noun is that it is unique......there must be losts of White Horse pubs about the UK....so (being devil's advocate) the only one in Brigg, which qualifies to have BIG starters is The Dying Gladiator!!!!.....and there must be lots of Nigel Fishers.....regards, ken harrison (one of many)

regards,
ken.

I spy in me kitchen:
'whiskas' for me pussies, 'daisy' washing-up liquid from Tesco, a bag of grass seed from 'wilko'; a squirty 'oust' from Johnson - a family company and a half empty tin of gloss paint by 'johnstones' and a loyalty card (for an free cuppa) printed, 'the loft' in Wrawby St.
