MANY PEOPLE FROM BRIGG AREA LIKELY TO BE INTERESTED IN NEW EXHIBITION

People living in Brigg and district who are interested in local history, Scunthorpe United, cricket, golf, rugby and other sports may well be interested in a couple of free-to-attend events at the North Lincolnshire Museum, on Oswald Road, Scunthorpe.
The Scunthorpe Memories 10 Year Anniversary Exhibition is now open and running until February 14. North Lincolnshire Council explains that Scunthorpe Memories is a group on Facebook, created to encourage their followers to share old photographs, memories and stories of Scunthorpe and the surrounding villages. The group now has 18,000 members from all over the world. This event will celebrate 10 years of the group and include displays of some of the key photographs that have been shared on their Facebook page over the past decade. A Memories at the Museum - Sport Themed Session on Thursday, January 30, from 10.30am to 11.30am, offers the chance for people to take a walk down memory lane and join in new discussion sessions for those with an interest in local history. "Whether you're into football, rugby, golf or running, why not get together with like-minded people and chat about your memories," the council suggests. A member of our team will have a selection of photos and items from the past. Spark memories and make new friends over tea and coffee."
The museum is on the main No 4 Hornsbys bus route from Brigg and Broughton to Scunthorpe. The venue is also close to the Laneham Street pay and display car park and the steel town's railway station (handy if you wish to travel to and from Barnetby).

Paul Stebbing, founder of Scunthorpe Memories, said: “I set up the Scunthorpe Memories Facebook group in January 2010 on returning to live in the town after a decade away. Being back in my birthplace, I suddenly caught up on a wave of nostalgia. I started to share my photographs and memories of growing up in Scunthorpe in the 1980s – including the clock in the town centre; long gone shops such as Prestos and Pennywise; and the annual Scunthorpe Gala. It soon became apparent that others wanted to do the same and over a thousand people joined in just a few days. The group continued to grow and we started to arrange talks, reunions and social events.
“Now, a decade on, the group is approaching its 10th birthday, and we have almost 20,000 members from all across the world. It’s important to me and to the members to celebrate this milestone, and we are incredibly grateful to North Lincolnshire Museum for offering to help us mark it by exhibiting a small selection of iconic local photographs that have been uploaded to the group over the years. These will be accompanied by a few, never seen before images.
“We’d like to see the group grow and evolve over the next few years and we hope to continue to work in partnership with the museum to capture and celebrate our town’s history and heritage."
Coun David Rose, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Culture at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “I am looking forward to seeing this exhibition on show at North Lincolnshire Museum; it is a fantastic idea. Scunthorpe Memories is a community group that gives people the opportunity to share their memories and photographs with local people but also showcases North Lincolnshire to a wider audience.
“North Lincolnshire has a varied history and our towns and villages have changed a lot over the years. This exhibition allows visitors to take a trip down memory lane or for the younger generation to learn more about where they live.”
