REPAIRS TO BRIGG LANDMARK ON THE WAY
In early May, Brigg Blog reported that a familiar feature within the town centre had disappeared from view.
When we checked this out, North Lincolnshire Council explained that the weather vane on top of the distinctive clocktower at the Buttercross had been damaged during high winds and had been taken down for repairs.
The local authority, which owns and operates the grade two listed building, was working to get the vane back in situ "as soon as possible."
Seeing that it was still missing two months later (early July), Brigg Blog contacted the council for a progress report.
This duly arrived from a spokesman for the local authority, who told us: "We've got some painting and timber work to do on the outside of the Buttercross over the summer. We'll be re-attaching the weather vane as part of this work."
Not mentioned in the council's update, but we think likely to be attended to as part of the forthcoming work, is the need to clean mould/moss off the plaque above the main entrance (see picture below).
This plaque records the royal visit to Brigg by Lady Diana, The Princess of Wales - "The People's Princess."
The Buttercross's 200th anniversary is next year, the building having first seen public use in 1819, though work on its construction began a year or two earlier.
It is perhaps best known today as the location of the award-winning Brigg Tourist Information Centre. There is also a lavish function suite on the floor above.
