IMPROVEMENTS REVEALED TODAY FOR MAJOR ROAD IN BRIGG

Funding has been approved to carry out improvements to a major road in Brigg and two others in North Lincolnshire.
The investment - announced today - has been welcomed by senior local councillors, including Coun Rob Waltham, pictured above.

It will come from Government funds.

FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL

North Lincolnshire’s road system is to receive a welcome financial boost of £6m with investment in road improvements across our area.
The council has been successful in securing £3.33m from the Government’s Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund to undertake the following works:

  • £1.86m for the A161 south from the A18
  • £1.28m for the A161 north from the A18
  • £189,000 for the A1084 Brigg
In addition, at the council’s cabinet meeting this week it was resolved to commit to bring forward an extra £3m to carry out road surface improvements across North Lincolnshire.
Final schemes are currently being worked up and many more roads are likely to receive resurfacing in the coming months. The money is in addition to the already committed £7m fund as part of the council’s budget in February.
The A161 and A1084 both cross over into neighbouring authority areas so we will be working closely with neighbouring councils to carry out the work.
Works on the A161 north have been completed between Crowle and the boundary with East Riding. This has included resurfacing, upgrading signage, refreshing road markings and localised improvements to drainage. The road studs have been replaced with SolarLite Active Road Studs to help improve visibility.
The next stage for the A161 North is to improve Crowle Gyratory to make it easier for drivers to navigate their way round. Options on improvements are being considered.
Work to improve the A161 south will include resurfacing sections of the road, including relining the route, new carriageway studs and upgrading identified signs. It is also being proposed to provide central hatching and shoulder rumble strips along some sections of the route. Village entry treatments (signage and road markings) will be provided where they don’t already exist. Work is planned to be carried out in 2020/21.
Improvements on the A1084 Brigg will include resurfacing the section of road from Monument roundabout to the county boundary. Lining will be refreshed and central hatching provided for some of the route. It is expected that work will be completed by March 2020.
Cllr Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds), Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “Investing in roads across North Lincolnshire is a key priority for us to ensure they are safe for all road users and improves road infrastructure, which is a major factor in boosting the local economy.
“Locally we have committed an extra £3m so that our road network is developed and necessary repairs are carried out. We have worked hard to manage taxpayers’ money well locally and because of this we have been able to secure this extra cash for our areas roads.
“It is fantastic that we have secured over £3m as well from the Department for Transport to carry out further improvements to roads.”
Cllr Neil Poole (Ridge Ward, Messingham), Cabinet Member for Commercial, said: “The money from the Government’s Safer Roads Fund will enable us to make improvements to some roads across North Lincolnshire where safety is a concern, including the A1084 through Brigg and the A161 which links the Isle of Axholme to the East Riding and Nottinghamshire.
“The improvements will improve visibility and accessibility to these main thoroughfares in North Lincolnshire, making it much safer for all road users.”
