ANOTHER UNNECESSARY SIGN SPOTTED IN BRIGG

Regular followers of Brigg Blog may recall that North Lincolnshire Council is looking to locate road signs considered of little or no use. The aim is to clear out the clutter and we think the initiative has been handed down by the Government to local authorities across the UK.
Brigg Blog immediately mentioned an advisory sign halfway down Glebe Road, alerting drivers they are approaching a school. As most readers will know, Brigg County Primary School is long gone in this part of town, a modern replacement having been built on Atherton Way and a housing estate built in its place off Glebe Road.
We can now add a second useless sign serving the same purpose in the same area. It's outside a house in Woodbine Avenue and opposite West Square and alerts drivers they are approaching Glebe Road school.
The painted icons of schoolgirl and boy have faded on the first sign we mentioned, but the graphics and clear on the second. That one might be recycled and used elsewhere in North Lincolnshire.

There are two styles of 'children' signs...one is normally the warning triangular sign with a taller girl leader a younger lad....the other, often yellow and can be seen on school buses, show a boy in short trousers, wearing a cap and carrying a satchel - he is escorting a younger girl in a frock coat and who is wearing a bonnet..the latter was designed in the 50's and a lot has changed over nearly 70 years...
If we approached Humberside Airport, for example, we wouldn't be surprised at seeing a sign warning of aircraft.....but we would be surprised if the sign showed a 1930's bi-plane....

.....in fact, Nige, the yellow sign looks like a scientist in wellies, carrying notes escorting the Elephant Man... next time you see the sign on the back of a school bus, take a look..
