BRIGG SHOW ON MAY DAY

May Day was once a big thing in Brigg, with pupils of the school in Glebe Road dancing around the maypole and a May Queen being chosen.
Things are a bit different 70 or 80 years on but we are pleased to see a group in the town is doing something special to mark the arrival of spring.
St John’s Singers will be holding a May Day concert on Friday, May 1, from 7.30pm.
The venue is the Church Hall, on Bigby Street.
Tickets are £7 and there will be a raffle.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to Christian Aid.

If you want tickets,  call 01652 653066 or 659560.

Truddling thro a number of places in North Yorkshire recently, I noticed that a number of towns have permanent maypoles in their market place....
Perhaps a Brigg maypole could create a greater community involvement and inspiration in rustic activities, rather than the limited affect of the annual festive Crimbo tree..
The maypole would be available for at least six months of the year for groups to prance around...compared to the inactivity of a Crimbo tree that just stands there looking questionably pretty..

...and I may add.....that the focus of financial attention during 2014/15 and 2015/16 is/will be on the Crimbo lights...
Ok the old festive lights needed replacing...but do we really need to sink the taxpayers' precept in lights + plus more lights......and it will cost £10k just to have the cabling stressed tested each year....that's about £2k a week during the limited period the lights are switched on....
During the rest of the year, 47 weeks......there is a wide range of community events....nuff said...
