However, today we took the 1pm No. 95 service from Scunthorpe back to Brigg, via Lakeside Retail Park (Ashby Ville), Greetwell and Scawby.
We paid a single fare of £3.20p to travel from Scunthorpe bus station to Cary Lane. We heard a seasoned user of this route describe the 95 service through Scawby as being quicker than the 4 route via Broughton.
We thought that needed checking out. So once back in Brigg we popped into the Tourist Information Centre at the Buttercross and collected photocopied timetables for both routes.
- 95 between Scunthorpe and Brigg (via Scawby) takes 29 minutes.
- 4 between Scunthorpe and Brigg (via Broughton) takes 45 minutes.
However, Monday to Friday, there are only five journeys on the 95 service from Brigg to Scunthorpe and just four in the reverse direction, while the 4 service runs throughout the day from 4.45am to 11.03pm.
When our bus passed the King William IV pub at Scawby Brook, we noted a huge queue of traffic backed up round Castlethorpe Corner because of the temporary traffic lights on Cake Mill Bridge.
Had we used the No 4 bus from Broughton, we'd have been stuck in that lot.

the #95 though quicker has fewer passengers,the #4 is more popular mainly for passengers to & from broughton & ashby after it's journey from scunthorpe heads through the villages of scawby,hibilstow & redbourne ending @ gainsthorpe[lime sidings]it also has an early service from kirton as a school run & latter back I've never understood why it can not run the rest of the day giving kirton a bus to & from brigg 5 times mon to sat with not much alteration to the time table.
Your make a very good point. We presume the "school run" may involve some subsidy/payment from North Lincolnshire Council, whereas subsequent journeys would have to pay their way. Would there be sufficient demand?
