NEW CLEE OR NOT NEW CLEE - THAT IS THE QUESTION FOR BRIGG TRAIN PASSENGERS

Old British Rail era sign showing the way to Brigg railway station for drivers and passengers on foot - picture on Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog

Grimsby Town FC sent a Twitter message out earlier to promote today's game with Sheffield United. But will fans of The Blades use the iconic Brigg line to get to Blundell Park?
Or will they, instead, take the more heavily used TransPennine Express route via Scunthorpe?
The Mariners are hoping for a crowd of about 4,000. Tickets cost £10 & £5.
Sadly, our Brigg line trains from Sheffield to Cleethorpes do not stop at New Clee - a halt near the Blundell Park ground.
Passengers from Brigg line trains wanting to watch GTFC home games must get off at Cleethorpes and walk some way back to the ground, which is near the boundary with Grimsby.
Perhaps calling at New Clee is something the firm running our Brigg line trains might look at.
TransPennine Express trains from Sheffiled via Scunthorpe don't stop at New Clee, either.
Only those running along the Barton line will pick up passengers at this halt close to the North Sea.
The same goes for Grimsby Docks station, between Grimsby Town and New Clee.
Could Brigg Line trains stop there, too?
Docks station is ideal if you want to shop on Freeman Street (and visit the market) or along Cleethorpes Road, Grimsby,
The only option at present for passengers using the Brigg line is to get off at Grimsby Town.

No Sheffield United fans travelled on the Brigg line, in January Northern Rail removed the Duo ticket offer, this was when 2 adults travelled together the second went half price.

TPE advance tickets from Sheffield Midland to Cleethorpes start from £9.50, Arriva Northern start at £16. A review of fares is to be carried out in September

Grimsby Town have been looking at Great Coates for a new location for their new stadium for years.

I doubt that Trans Pennine would consider either regular or special calls at New Clee although perhaps a modest case could exist for the occasional call by the Brigg line trains. Historically the use of New Clee declined rapidly in the 1960s to the extent that at the close of the decade the only trains calling there, with the exception of the first morning service to Doncaster on Mondays to Fridays, were those to or from New Holland, a situation which pertains to this day with the Barton-on-Humber service. I suspect that levels of economic activity around New Clee station might not really justify what calls there now and it is possibly only the current difficulty in passenger service withdrawal reflected in the amount of so called "Parliamentary" services up and down the country which ensures the presence of both New Clee and Grimsby Docks in the timetable. On the other hand, with the significant housing developments which have taken place over the past decades west of Grimsby it might be the time to look again at Great Coates, Healing and Stallingborough.

Great Coates, Healing and Stallingborough could easily added to the present Saturday Only Brigg line services, sadly education of what the customers East of Sheffield need is put in the long grass as train operating companies saturate there investment and ideas in Leeds and Manchester
