BRIGG PARKS ARE SUI GENERIS

Woodbine Park, Brigg - built on the site of the former prefab housing estate - picture on Nigel Fisher's Brigg Blog

This is National Parks Week so Brigg Blog thought we'd look out a picture or two from our files to show the town's Woodbine Park  (above) and East Park (below).
Woodbine Park is a play area built on the site of the post-war prefab housing estate, long since demolished, while East Park is the small tree-enhanced area near the Tintab(s) seating shelter, close to the Monument war memorial and beside the A18.
Actually, it appears National Parks Week is seven days spotlighting our National Parks, eg North York Moors, Yorkshire Dales and Snowdonia, rather than a week focussing attention on local parks (and green spaces) across the UK.
Please note the use of "eg" in the previous sentence - an abbreviation taken from the Latin exempli gratia ("for example").
We were very interested to see it suggested in one of the national papers over the weekend that all Government websites are to be banned from using Latin phrases and abbreviations, as it appears they cause confusion, particularly to users of so-called social media.
Brigg Blog had to smile because  the planning portal used by local councils features some applications described as sui generis.
That's a Latin term meaning in a class by itself and is an officially defined planning category  to cover casinos, petrol stations, beauty parlours, etc, (sorry, there we go again slipping in the Latin et cetera).
We wonder how the Government web masters et al (sorry, again!) at national level might address this apparent contradition of banning Latin but then using it as a planning term.
Following comments we made earlier this year about sui generis being something few folk could be expected to understand, we had better point out that North Lincolnshire Council has included a helpful description in the latest Brigg application as you can see here.. but our old friend sui generis still gets a mention!
