FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
As part of the Words Count and Imagination Library projects in North Lincolnshire, we are working with local author and illustrator, Hannah Dale to host Brigg's Big Secret from Monday 4 July and Friday 8 July to get children and young people interested in reading.
Hannah's work will be celebrated by children and young people in Brigg across the week. Hannah’s latest children’s story, ‘Mr Hare’s Big Secret’, will provide inspiration for a variety of literacy themed activities taking place at Brigg Primary School, Brigg St Mary's Primary School and The Angel in Brigg.
Hannah has already delivered inspiring workshops at Brigg secondary schools, drawing on her own career in design and business to discuss key issues of enterprise and employability.
On Thursday 7 July, The Rhubarb Theatre Company will perform an interactive storytelling of ‘Mr Hare’s Big Secret’ at The Angel in Brigg. Children under five with their parents and carers are welcome to join us at this free event, from 2.15pm to 3pm. Places are limited, so please call 01724 297287 to book your place.
To round up the week, a celebration event will take place at Brigg Primary School on Friday 8 July. There will be lots going on including animal handling, songs, stories and craft activities. This event is invitation only.
Hannah’s distinctive work through her company Wrendale Designs, is available nationally in venues such as garden centres and stately homes. It is also sold worldwide.
Hannah is looking forward to working with local school children.
Hannah said: “Reading storybooks was a hugely important part of my childhood. I have many treasured memories of favourite books, where the illustrations were just as memorable as the stories themselves.
“I feel lucky that through my art work I have been given the opportunity to work on children’s picture books. It has been a pleasure to create these characters, especially as my own children are at the perfect age for these books.
“I want children to develop a passion for reading. It develops their imagination and they can escape into another world. I don’t think any other form of media can beat that.”
Coun David Rose, Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Learning at North Lincolnshire Council said,
“We are grateful to Hannah for spending time in our schools to share her skills and experience. Hannah’s work is inspired by the Lincolnshire countryside. We hope that her story will be a real inspiration to our local children and young people.”
