FROM KIRSTY WESTFIELD, NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL
North Lincolnshire Council has invested £33,000 into the Wheels 2 Work scheme and has bought 11 more scooters that will be available from 1 April to help people get to and from work or training.
Wheels 2 Work is a scooter hire provision scheme to help people get over the problem of getting to work, college or training because of genuine transport difficulties. The scheme is only open to people who live in North Lincolnshire.
In total, the council will have 30 scooters for people to hire; a mix of 50cc and 125cc.
Scooters can be hired for up to 12 months to give you time to either save up and buy your own vehicle or find alternative travel arrangements.
Scooter hires comes with the following package:

  • Payment for your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course
  • Vehicle road tax
  • Comprehensive insurance (£350 excess applies)
  • Breakdown cover
  • Full servicing and maintenance
  • A security lock
  • Safety equipment (helmet, gloves and hi-vis vest)
The cost of the scooters:
  • 125cc - £80 deposit and monthly charge of £80

Coun Rob Waltham (Brigg & Wolds), Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Health, Strategic Projects and Regeneration, said: “Being able to afford transport to get to work or training can be a real barrier for many people. The Wheels 2 Work scheme helps people solve this issue as they can hire a scooter at a fraction of the cost compared to if they had to pay for everything themselves. These scooters will also enable unemployed young people to be able find work because they are not restricted to working a short distance from their home. The scooter means they can travel that bit further to access employment.
“The package for the scooter hire ensures people have everything they need to support them to travel to work.
“We have had a high demand for scooter hire, which is why we have invested more money into the scheme to be able to buy additional scooters. This will enable more people to take advantage of this great scheme whilst they sort out a more permanent transport solution. We also hope it will help more people find work and get back into employment in North Lincolnshire; particularly for many younger people.”
