One of the more pleasant pastimes in Brigg during the warmer months is to visit the White Hart Inn, or the Nelthorpe Arms (aka Scanlon's), buy a pint at the bar, take it into the beer garden and sit in the sun, watching the waters of the Old River Ancholme drift slowly by. Spring always sees Mary’s Tree come into blossom at the Nelthorpe Arms, Mary Scanlon being such a popular figure at the hostelry, with husband Myles, for so many years.
